Lot 21-246. Egyptian blue-green faience Amulet of Thoth with the head of a ibix, the Creator God #2. Late Period, ca. 664-332 B.C.

Egyptian Amulet of Thoth, the Creator God #2. A blue-green faience amulet of Thoth, with the head of a ibix, measuring 44 mm high, pierced for suspension. Repaired, some faience remaining, Egypt, Late Period, ca. 664-332 B.C. Thoth is an unusual god. Though some stories place him as a son of Ra, others say that Thoth created himself through the power of language. He is the creator of magic, the inventor of writing, teacher of man, the messenger of the gods (and thus identified by the Greeks with Hermes) and the divine record-keeper and mediator.
