Lot 2-329. A Choice Chupicuaro Red Burnished Cigar Holder.
A Choice Chupicuaro Red Burnished Cigar Holder. A choice Chupicuaro red burnished cigar holder, Mexico, c. 600 - 500 BC, in early ritual style, with saw-tooth edges and incised design around the “bowl”. As evidenced by the larger size of the bowl, the longer and thicker stem, and the ample use-ware present on this example it probably was intended for the large “trumpet” or pyramid-shaped rolled cigars in use at the time. These cigars probably were constructed of an outer tube of corn husks, with tobacco leaf and other additives used in the various rituals. L: 7 1/8” (18 cm). Intact and perfect, a lovely example. Ex J. R. Collection. Value Range: $300-$400.
