A Choice Roman Chalcedony Intaglio with a Gryllus. A nice Roman chalcedony intaglio with a Gryllus, c. 2nd - 3rd Century AD, with a horse’s head, body composed of a Selinus mask with the head of a ram, and legs of a stork. An interesting combination of elements which served a talismanic or apotropaic function for the wearer of the stone. 18 x 10 mm and domed on both sides. Intact. Cf. Walters, Catalogue of the Engraved Gems…in the British Museum (1926), p. 254, no. 2575 (pl. XXIX, no. 2575) for the type; Ex Los Angeles private collection. Value Range: $500-$600.
