Domitius Domitianus. Usurper, A.D. 296-297. Æ Follis (25.4 mm, 8.82 g, 1 h). Alexandria mint. IMP C L DOMITIVS DOMITIANVS AVG, laureate head right / GENIO POVLI ROMANI, Genius standing left, modius on head, holding cornucopia and patera from which liquor flows; at feet left, an eagle. Γ in right field, ALE in exergue. RIC 20 corr.; Hunter 1. VF, pitted. Ex Ponterio & Associates #179, Lot 6306. RIC erroneously lists the eagle as having a wreath in its beak. The wreath-in-beak type does exist, but it is a rare variation. The revolt of Domitius Domitianus in Egypt destabilized a vitally strategic region by interrupting the grain supply to Rome and opening the possibility of Persian (Sasanian) invasion. For almost a year, Domitius Domitianus controlled Alexandria and its mint, striking aurei and folles, as well as a series of Roman provincial coins.
