Lot 33-011. Sicily, Katane. Ca. 435-412 B.C. AR tetradrachm. Reverse die signed by the 'Maestro della foglia'.

Sicily, Katane. Ca. 435-412 B.C. AR tetradrachm (24 mm, 15.16 g, 7 h). Reverse die signed by the 'Maestro della foglia'. Charioteer driving slow quadriga right; above, Nike flying right, crowning horses / Laureate head of Apollo right; olive-spray to right (off flan). SNG ANS 1254 (same dies). Fine.

The term 'Maestro della foglia' (Master of the Leaf) was coined by Rizzo. He used it to describe the master die engraver active in Sicily who signed his dies with a leaf or leaf and berries, and in whose work can be seen the influence of the latest styles in Greek sculpture. In the decades to follow, his successors Euainetos, Herakleidas, and Choirion would go on to produce some of the finest masterpieces of Greek numismatic art, and indeed some of the finest work that remains unrivalled even 2500 years later.
