Spain, Catalonia. 1869 (1870). Æ medal (38 mm, 29.25 g). Rare. VOLUNTARIOS CATALANES, CAMPAÑA / DE / CUBA inscribed on rectangular scrolled plaque inscribed, agave plants above and below; date below between two five-pointed stars, signed CASTELLS / Plain. No mount or ribbon. AU, much mint red. Struck in 1870 for the Catalan Volunteers who helped put down the insurrection led by Carlos Manuel de Céspedes, who had declared Cuba's independence from Spain on 10 October 1868. Hostilities lasted a decade until the Pact of Zanjón, which concluded in Spain's favor.
