Legio X Fretensis countermark. This Legion was founded between 41 and 40 B.C. by Octavian, with the intention to put an end to Sextus Pompeius' occupation of Sicily'which jeopardized the grain supply to Rome. The name Fretensis was given to the legion because it guarded the Straits of Messina. Legion X was active in many of Rome's most famous battles, including the Battle of Actium, the Jewish Wars, and the wars against the Armenians and Parthians. Legion X is recorded to have existed at least until the 410's. Veterans of Legion X retired to Patras in western Greece.
