Commodus. A.D. 177-192. Æ sestertius (27.4 mm, 17.12 g, 6 h). Rome, A.D. 187. M COMMOCVS ANT P FELIX AVG BRIT, laureate head right / P M TR P XII IMP VIII COS V P P, SC, MON AVG, the three Monetae standing left, each holding scales and cornucopia. RIC 500; BMCRE 599. Fine, scarce. Attractive green patina, struck on a small flan.

This is the first appearance, on coinage, of this popular reverse type. The three Monetae represent the three metals used in coin manufacture; gold, silver, and bronze.
