Lot 35-446. Spain. Ferdinand and Isabella I. 1469-1504. Æ Double Excellent Weight. Dated (15)85. Cornelius Janssen (1564-1604), manufacturer.

Spain. Ferdinand and Isabella I. 1469-1504. Æ Double Excellent Weight (15 mm, 6.33 g). Dated (15)85. Cornelius Janssen (1564-1604), manufacturer. Confronted crowned busts of Ferdinand, on left, and Isabella, on right / Hand symbol (for Antwerp); 8-5/C-I across field; all within wreath. Withers & Withers pp. 30-1, and p. 60. VF, brown patina, light porosity.

The confronted busts of Ferdinand and Isabella I continued to be used on coin weights of Antwerp for at least a century. The reverse type shows a hand (representing the city of Antwerp), often between the manufacturer's initials, as on this specimen. Here the date is also shown. Many of these weights are reported in British metal detectorist finds, but they are found all over Europe as Spanish gold coins circulated widely beyond the borders of Spain.
