Paduan Medallion, Cavino Strike. Septimius Severus. A.D. 193-211. Æ medallion (40.2 mm, 45.31 g, 7 h). Struck early - mid 16th century. L SEPTIMIVS SEVERVS PERTINAX AVG IMP VII, laureate and cuirassed bust right, drapery on left shoulder; Gorgon on breast plate / DIVI M P II F M P TR P IIII COS II P P, Mars standing facing, with head right, holding spear and resting hand on shield; cuirass to left. Klawans p. 102, 1; Lawrence 69. EF, beautiful red-gold toning, two spots of black patina, minor scratches. Extremely Rare. Quote from David Sear, "This would certainly appear to be of the quality of an original Paduan by Cavino and the dies clearly correspond to the striking in silver in the Bibliothèque National (cf. Klawans p. 102, 1). However, I do not feel that I have sufficient expertise in the field of Renaissance medals to provide documentation. But in any case, congratulations on a great acquisition."
