Lot 42-186. Caracalla. A.D. 198-217. AR denarius. Rome mint, Struck A.D. 201-206.

Caracalla. A.D. 198-217. AR denarius (19.0 mm, 3.32 g, 12 h). Rome mint, Struck A.D. 201-206. ANTONINVS PIVS AVG, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right / VICT PART MAX, Victory advancing left, holding wreath and palm. RIC 144b; BMCRE 296; RSC 658. VF.

In A.D. 216, Caracalla launched an unsuccessful attack on the Parthian Empire. His forces carried out a series of massacres along the northern regions of Parthia, before withdrawing to Asia Minor. Caracalla was assassinated at Edessa in April, 217. Interestingly, this coin was struck 10 years before Caracalla's invasion of Parthia, foreshadowing the events to come.
