Phoenicia, Tyre. Valerian I. A.D. 253-260. AE 28 (27.5 mm, 6 g, 1 h). IMP CP LIC VALERIANVS AVG, laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / COLT VRO METRO, Dido standing left holding a ruler and scepter, surveying construction; mason above gate, worker with pick-axe digging before gate; ΔI-ΔN on either side of worker, murex shell above. Rouvier 2501 var.; BMC 470 var. aVF, orange highlights, flan pits. Very Rare. 

Ex Amphora Coins. 

After her husband Sichaeus was murdered, Dido fled the city of Tyre to Egypt. Here, she requested only enough land which could be enclosed by one bull's hide. She tore the hide into strips and surrounded a spot upon which she built a citadel which she called Byrsa. The city of Carthage sprung up around the citadel.None of the standard references list Dido's name in the reverse field, although one was sold by CNG in 2010, who failed to mention the uniqueness of that coin.
