Lot 47-140. Antoninus Pius. A.D. 138-161. AE sestertius. Rome mint, struck A.D. 152-153. Extremely Rare. Possibly Ex Wiczay collection
Antoninus Pius. A.D. 138-161. AE sestertius (34.4 mm, 26.65 g, 5 h). Rome mint, struck A.D. 152-153. ANTONINVS AVG PIVS P P TR P XVI, laureate head right / COS IIII, S-C, ROMA, Roma seated left, holding Victory and spear. RIC 911 var; BMCRE 1932† var; Cohen 695 var; Wiczay 1224 (this coin). VF, porous. Olive and brown patina. Extremely Rare. Possibly Ex Wiczay Collection. BMC, p 322 footnote says "Cohen 695; but he quotes Wiczay, who gives the coin as a sestertius. Doubtful."
Neither the Wiczay or Eckhel books have a drawing of this coin. It is uncertain if this is the actual Wiczay coin or another of its type.
This coin is clearly a sestertius, given its weight and diameter, and not an as as described in BMC and Cohen.
