Lot 48-123. Judaea, Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). Hadrian. A.D. 117-138. AE. Ca. A.D. 131/2.

Judaea, Aelia Capitolina (Jerusalem). Hadrian. A.D. 117-138. AE (23 mm, 10.01 g, 11 h). Ca. A.D. 131/2. [IMP CAES T]RAIANO HADRIAN[O] AVG [P P], laureate, draped and cuirassed bust right / COL ยท AEL K-A-PIT [CON]D, emperor, as founder, plowing the pomerium with yoke of oxen right; vexillum in background. Meshorer 2; Kadman 1; Rosenberger 1; SNG ANS -. Near VF, green patina. The accounts of Dio and Eusebius provide two different dates for Hadrian's refounding of Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina during his visit to the region as part of his extensive travels. Dio suggested the imperial visit occurred in 132, and that the refounding of Jerusalem as Aelia Capitolina as well as Hadrian's building of a temple to Jupiter on the Temple Mount precipitated the outbreak of hostilities which became known as the Bar Kochba Revolt, while Eusebius proposed a date about four years later (136) after hostilities ended and as divine punishment for the Jews' rebuilding the Temple. Meshorer, however, observed this type contained in hoards of Bar Kochba coins, thus confirming the Dio's account of Jerusalem's refounding in 132.
