Lot 53-258. Eran-Vidisha Region. Anonymous. ca. 2nd Century B.C. AE karshapana fraction. Very Rare.

Eran-Vidisha Region. Anonymous. ca. 2nd Century B.C. AE karshapana fraction (10.9 mm, 1.24 g). Very Rare. Matsya seated left / Blank. Unpublished. VF.

Matsya is the first avatar of the Hindu god Vishnu, often taking the form of half man, half fish.

Matsya avatara is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu to save Vedas the Holy scripts of Hindus and Manu from floods. A story very similar to Noah's story in Judaeo-Christianity. Depiction of Matsya on North Indian Coinage is not known and moreover on a punch mark is not known. This makes this coin a unique copper punch mark.

This is perhaps the oldest ancient description of what is considered a "mermaid" in Western cultures.
