Lot 59-177. L. Procilius Filius. 80 B.C. AR serrate denarius. Rome mint. Ex D. Thomas collection.
L. Procilius Filius. 80 B.C. AR serrate denarius (19.4 mm, 3.87 g, 11 h). Rome mint. S·C, head of Juno Sospita right, wearing goat skin / L·PROCOLI·F, Juno Sospita driving biga right, holding spear and shield; serpent below. Crawford 379/2; Sydenham 772; RSC Procilia 2. Toned aVF. Ex D. Thomas collection.
Little is known of the Procilia gens, but the theme of Juno Sospita on this moneyer's coinage would indicate that they came from the city of Lanuvium, where her temple had been constructed and yearly rituals held.
Crawford mentions that he may be the same Procilius whom Cicero records as being prosecuted and condemned for misconduct (including murder) circa 56 B.C. Some experts theorize that he may be the historian Procilius, but this cannot be verified.
