Spain. Shipwreck treasure find from "El Cazador". Uncleaned clump of 4 AR 2 reales (45.47 mm, 22.31 g). 1783. Ex Craig Boyd. This coin is an uncleaned clump of four 2 reales coins as found and was a part of the cargo recovered from the wreck of the Spanish brigantine of war, El Cazador. The loss of this vessel was part of an occurrence that dramatically altered the destiny of the United States of America. The immense cargo carried by El Cazador was to be used to redeem nearly worthless Spanish paper currency then in circulation in Spanish-owned Louisiana and would have stabilized the Spanish monetary system in colonial North America and possibly would have stabilized Spain's North American holdings. After the loss of El Cazador Carlos III, the King of Spain commenced negotiations to sell or trade Louisiana. On January 11, 1784, El Cazador sailed from the port of Vera Vruz, Mexico, for New Orleans, carrying 450,000 pesos of minted silver coins. The vessel and her crew disappeared into the winter seas, sinking without a trace. This lot comes with a flip signed by the finder of the treasure - Craig Boyd.
