Galba. A.D. 68-69. AR denarius (18.36 mm, 3.26 g, 7 h). Rome mint, A.D. 68. IMP SER GALBA CAESAR AVG, laureate head right / DIVA AVGVSTA, Livia standing left holding patera in right and long vertical scepter in left. RIC 186; RSC 55. Good Fine.
From the Joseph Donzanti Collection; Ex Stacks.
Galba ruled for seven months during the Year of the Four Emperors (AD 68/9). As his authority was based primarily on military might and his possession of Rome, he attempted to shore it up by advertising his very distant connection to Augustus and the happier times at the beginning of the Julio-Claudian dynasty. On this coin he features Livia, the wife of Augustus, to whom he was related through his stepmother.
