Lot 549. Weapons Currency from D.R. Congo, 19th Century A.D.
Weapons Currency from D.R. Congo, 19th Century A.D. A fine Trombash (weapon currency) from the Mangbetu peoples of northern D.R.Congo, ca. Late 19th century. This threatening blade form is 10-1/2 long, 8 wide and was never actually used as a weapon, but was instead a form of currency and a symbol of rank among the Mangbetu people. This old example is made of iron, with its wood handle now turned to a rich golden color from age and usage. The circular holes in the blades of these knives are believed to indicate the number of wives the owner had-in this case, just two. Ex Florida collection. Value range: $400 - $500.
