Lot 276. An excellent Mangbetu Trombash currency blade from the D.R.Congo, ca. Late 19th Century.

An excellent Mangbetu Trombash currency blade from the D.R.Congo, ca. Late 19th Century. This somewhat threatening blade is 13-1/2? long and was a form of currency, as well as a symbol of rank among the Mangbetu people of the far northern edge of D.R.Congo. The blade was forged from iron and its organic-looking handle is made of wood, now turned to a rich golden color from age. The circular holes in the blades of these knives are believed to indicate the number of wives the owner had, in this case just two. Value range: $400 - $500.
