Lot 754. Manuel I Comnenus. 1143-1180. AE half tetarteron. Uncertain Greek mint, struck ca. 1143-1152. Scarce.

Manuel I Comnenus. 1143-1180. AE half tetarteron (17.6 mm, 2.10 g, 6 h). Uncertain Greek mint, struck ca. 1143-1152. Cruciform monogram of Manuel / Crowned facing bust of Manuel I Comnenus, holding labarum and globus cruciger. SBV 1979; DOC 22. gVF, green patina. Scarce.

The difference between this and the more common Thessalonica mint issue (Sear 1977) is based purely on style. The Thessalonica mint has much smaller letters in the monogram and is of finer style, the uncertain Greek mint has larger letters and is typically more crude. This specimen, although it has the more crude style with the larger letters, is a very well executed example of the type.
