Lot 255. Marcian. A.D. 450-457. AE4 half-centenionalis or nummus. Thessalonica or Cyzicus mint.
Marcian. A.D. 450-457. AE4 half-centenionalis or nummus (9.4 mm, .89 g, 6 h). Thessalonica or Cyzicus mint. D N MAR[CIANVS P F] AVG, pearl-diademed, draped and cuirassed bust of Marcian right / RIC X monogram: Marcian #1; above, cross; all within laurel-wreath // CHES or CVZ . RIC X 535 or 564; Cf. LRBC 1879 or 2608. EF for type, dark patina - better than average.
The description for this piece "fits" perfectly with the RIC attribution as an official issue piece from Thessalonica or Cyzicus on the basis of the visible seriphs of the exergual mint mark. The opinion which has been expressed that it may actually be from an Ostrogothic western mint (based on style) may or may not be important to consider. It is possible that an unofficial issue from a western source copied the Thessalonica or Cyzicus type right down to the exergual mint mark.
