Phrygia, Ancyra. Hadrian. A.D. 117-138. AE 25 (24.5 mm, 8.99 g, 12 h). Mèn. Αsklepiou, archon. ΑΥ ΚΑΙ ΤΡΑΙ ΑΔΡΙΑΝΟ , laureate head of Hadrian right, drapery on left shoulder / ΕΠΙ ΜΗΝ Α ΚΛ ΑΡΧ ΑΝΚΥΡΑΝΩΝ, Zeus, naked, standing facing, head left, holding anchor and long scepter. RPC III, 2540; Lindgren III 560. aVF, minor adhesions. Rare.
Ankyra is the Greek word for anchor and Zeus holding an anchor is a relatively common motif on the coinage of this city, a play on words on the city's name. Interestingly though, the city is landlocked and is nowhere near the sea!
