Arabia Petraea(?), Uncertain Arabian or Mesopotamian Mint(?). Commodus. A.D. 177-192. AE 23 (22.7 mm, 5.97 g, 5 h). ]COMMO[, laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right, seen from behind / LEG XV, Aquila between two legionary standards. RPC IV.3 Online 10431; SNG Righetti 476 (Patrae, described as LEG XX). Fine, brown patina with thick earthen deposits. Very rare, only one specimen known to RPC.
The legion number is not clear on either the Righetti or Agora specimen, either XX or XV are possibilities. (RPC describes it as LEG XX and does not assign it to a mint). It is possible that this coin falls into the same rare and unpublished series as the Sphinx coin in this sale. (edit: since learning of both of these coins, RPC has added the griffin coin and edited the description of RPC 10431 to LEG XV instead of LEG XX. These two coins remain the only two known coins of Legio XV.)
