Lot 10-072. Octavian. 44-27 B.C. AR fourree denarius. Italian (Rome?) mint, ca. 31 B.C.
Octavian. 44-27 B.C. AR fourree denarius (17.4 mm, 3.04 g, 6 h). Italian (Rome?) mint, ca. 31 B.C. Bare head right / CAESAR DIVI • F, Apollo seated right on rock, shield on his back, holding lyre. RIC 401; RSC 61; BMCRE 596. Fine. The fourree core is visible on the reverse, on his head and shoulder. The standard references list this reverse type as Mercury, with a petasus on his back, but modern scholarship has proven this to be Apollo with a shield. This series was most likely struck after the battle of Actium, to celebrate Octavian's victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra.
