Tauric Chersonesos, Chersonesos(?). 2nd-3rd Centuries AD AE 17 (16.6 mm, 2.39 g, 6 h). Radiate and draped bust of Helios right, whip over right shoulder / XЄ-[P..], Nike advancing left, holding wreath and palm. Anohkin -; RPC -. Near VF, green patina, light porosity, edge flaws. Extremely rare, seemingly unique and unpublished.
Ex Olympus Numismatic UG 14 (9 August 2024), lot 738 (there, atttributed to Rhodes).
Originally attributed to the city of Rhodes by Olypus Numismatics, that attribution cannot be correct. The style, small flan size, and extant legend are all incorrect for that city. Our attribution to Chersonesos is uncertain, but the clear legend XЄ on the reverse supports that conclusion.
