Lot 267. Philip I . AD. 244-249. AE sestertius. Rome mint, Struck AD. 245.
Philip I . AD. 244-249. AE sestertius (30.9 mm, 20;.18 g, 12 h). Rome mint, Struck AD. 245. IMP CAES M IVL [PHILLIPVS AVG], laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Philip Senior right, seen from behind / ADVENTVS AVGVSTI, Philip on horseback left, raising hand and holding scepter; // SC. Cf. RIC IV 165 v.? (Philip riding LEFT, legend ends AVGVSTI rather than AVGG). damaged VF, full-flan strike on round flan, area of corrosion obscures half the Obv, legend; re-toning after (presumably) an old over-enthusiastic cleaning.
RIC IV, iii does not list this exact reverse type for either Philip I or II. Only "rider right", and "AVGG" rather than AVGVSTI are listed. However, marginalia (dated 1986)in RIC IV, iii, in a previous owner's hand, notes "rider left".
