Lot 12-002. Macedon, Skione. Ca. 480-450 B.C. AR diobol. Very Rare.

Macedon, Skione. Ca. 480-450 B.C. AR diobol (10.5 mm, 1.21 g, 11 h). Forepart of lion right, head reverted / Quadripartite incuse square. SNG ANS 720 corr. var. (Skithae, triobol); SNG Cop 325 corr. var. (same); BMC 2 corr. var. (same). Fine.

Very Rare.

This coin type had been previously attributed to the city of Skithae due to the lack of complete legends found on most coins. A coin with full legends has corrected the attribution to Skione. BMC notes "It is very doubtful whether this coin be of Scione; in fabric it resembles rather the coins of Acanthus." This denomination is not listed in the major references.
