A choice Near Eastern bronze finial with rampant lions, Western Iran, early 1st Millennium BC, their paws supporting a grotesque human face. There is a cushion-shaped molding at top and bottom of the tube and the lions are modeled with much elegance and style. Intact with attractive patination. H: 6 ¾” (17.2 cm). Mounted on a custom base. Cf. Moorey, Catalogue of Ancient Persian Bronzes in the Ashmolean Museum (1971), p. 152, no 173 & Porada, Dark Ages, pl. III, 4 for other examples of this scarcer finial form.
