Roman Marble intaglio. 2nd-3rd Century. 12 x 10 mm. Gorgoneion head, facing in quarter right Rounded and stylized face. These common cameo types often were set in jewelry, such as earrings and were popular particularly in the East, where they susbstituted the traditional symbol of the eye, which warded against evil.
