Lot 15-105. Egypt, Alexandria. Nero. A.D. 54-68. BI tetradrachm. Dated year 14=A.D. 67/8. Scarce type. Ex Lindgren collection.

Egypt, Alexandria. Nero. A.D. 54-68. BI tetradrachm (25.4 mm, 12.53 g, 12 h). Dated year 14=A.D. 67/8. Scarce type. NEPΩ KΛAV KAIΣ ΣEB ΓEP AV, L IΔ, radiate head left / NEMEIOΣ ZEVΣ, head of Zeus Nemeios right, crowned with celery leaves. Milne 279; Emmett 136; RPC 5308. VF. Ex Lindgren collection. This coin commemorates the Nemean Games, the quadrennial athletic and musical competition held in August of 66 or 67 AD in the grove of Zeus Nemeios in the city of Argos. Nero himself is said to have been a competitor there. Traditionally, the Nemean games were supposed to have been started by Hercules after he slew the Namean Lion. The winners of the Nemean games were crowned with celery leaves (rather than laurel leaves at other games) hence Zeus is crowned with them on this coin.
