Iron Stirrup. English Viking, X-XI Century AD. Found in the East Riding of Yorkshire along the battle route of the Battle of Stamford Bridge. Iron Stirrup with twisted strap-ring and flat footplate on raised tread. 6" high Choice for iron. LMMC.23.4 cf also BM Guide Anglo Saxon Antiq. 110 cf. Type used by Vikings and Anglo Saxons. Museum catalog comparisons and find location support use by Vikings rather than Anglo Saxons. The Battle of Stamford Bridge has the English king Harold Godwinson defeating the Viking forces of Harald Hardrada. However, this battle so weakened and delayed the English forces that the Norman forces of William were victorious at Hastings about a week later.
