Lot 23-228. Moche Combat Scene.

Moche Combat Scene. An excellent Moche V molded vessel from Peru, ca. 550 – 700 AD. This 5-3/4" high spouted jar portrays a scene from Moche mythology, featuring important supernatural characters engaged in ritual combat. The Bird Demon has captured the Fox or Rodent Demon and is leading him by means of a serpent wrapped around his neck. The Bird Demon is holding a staff or atlatl in one hand and a battle mace, as well as the tail of the serpent, in the other. White kaolin slip is used to highlight various physical attributes. In excellent condition, crisply molded, with nice dendrites.
