A Nice Colima Human-Headed Ceramic Pipe Bowl. A Colima human-headed pipe bowl, West Mexico, c. 150 BC - AD 250, the head with a conical cap which flared out to make the bowl (now lost). A clay tube or a reed would have been inserted into the hold on the lower portion of the back and the tobacco placed into the bowl on top of the head, the head acting as a cooling chamber for the smoke. H: 2 ¾” (7 cm). Much evidence of soot over the brown surfaces indicating heavy use. Ex J. R. Collection. Value Range: $250-$350.
