Lot 31-286. A Greek Phiale (Patera) or Omphalos Bowl.

A Greek Phiale (Patera) or Omphalos Bowl. A nice Greek phiale or Omphalos bowl, c. 4th - 3rd Century BC, known to the Romans as a patera, decorated with three parallel bands in red slip, central circular raised area with opposing depression on the base, two holes for suspension just below the rim. A nice example with mineral deposits throughout. Dia: 6" (15.2 cm). Professionally repaired from three sherds. The omphalos represented the "navel of the Earth"ン and was used to pour offerings, with statues and other images of deities commonly depicted holding one. Ex J. Rilling Estate.
