A Greek Phiale (Patera) or Omphalos Bowl. A nice Greek phiale or Omphalos bowl, c. 4th - 3rd Century BC, known to the Romans as a patera, decorated with three parallel bands in red slip, central circular raised area with opposing depression on the base, two holes for suspension just below the rim. A nice example with mineral deposits throughout. Dia: 6" (15.2 cm). Professionally repaired from three sherds. The omphalos represented the "navel of the Earth"ï¾ and was used to pour offerings, with statues and other images of deities commonly depicted holding one. Ex J. Rilling Estate.
