Lot 37-375. Roman Terracotta Lamp with Jupiter, 1st Century AD.

Roman Terracotta Lamp with Jupiter, 1st Century AD. A large Roman terracotta lamp depicting the bust of Jupiter behind and eagle, Late 1st Century AD. A very attractive example, mold made, with double-convex body, sharply tapering towards the bottom. Central concave disk set off from the shoulders by molding grooves, shoulders themselves smooth with rounded nozzle. Fill-hole to lower right side of disk with air vent below. A large ring handle placed at back, edges decorated with two incised lines. Unsigned circular base set off by groove. L: 6 3/8ヤ (16.1 cm). A few repairs to nozzle, right side and handle. Orange slip remains in a few places. Cf. Bailey Q1250-1 for comparisons. Ex old English collection. Est Value $400 - $500.
