A Roman Terracotta Votive Depicting a Pair of Musicians. A Roman terracotta votive depicting a pair of musicians, 2nd - 3rd Century AD, both women, each wearing rolled diadems and long gowns, richly adorned wearing earrings, necklaces and bracelets. One of the women holds a tambourine and the other is playing the aulos, which was an ancient Greek wind instrument with a sound described as similar to that of bagpipes, with a chanter and drone. It is often depicted in social settings or accompanying physical activities such as wrestling. It is also associated with the ecstatic cults of Dionysos and the Korybantes of the goddess Cybele. H: 6 (15.2 cm). Mineral deposits throughout, repair to lower right side. Ex New Jersey estate. Est. Value $800 - $900.
