Laureate head of Octavian left / CAESAR - DIVI F, Victory standing to left on globe and holding wreath in extended right hand and shouldering palm branch with left hand. RIC 254b; RSC 64; CRI 407. VF, toned, clear, sharp portrait of Octavian; bankers mark. Ex D. Thomas Collection. This coin is part of the series issued to commemorate Octavian's victory over Mark Antony and Cleopatra at Actium. The Battle of Actium was the decisive confrontation of the final war of the Roman Republic, a naval engagement between Octavian's fleet and the combined forces of Mark Antony and Cleopatra on 2 September 31 BC, on the Ionian Sea near the city of Actium. Octavian's fleet was commanded by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa.
