Lot 11-196. Moche Crab Vessel

A large Moche canteen from Peru, ca. 400 - 700 AD. This lovely vessel is 9" high and is decorated on each side with a finely detailed crab, molded in high relief. The realistically portrayed crustacean is set off against a background of light orange clay by being painted in cream, with red highlights. The suspension loops are intact. An impressive, showy piece. Ex Sarmiento collection. Value range $600 - $1000
