Lot 6-395. Shipibo Jar.
Shipibo Jar. A superb Shipibo figural jar from the Upper Amazon region of Brazil or Peru, ca. 1940’s. It is 7" high, 6-1/2" in diameter and has a wonderful face incorporated into the broad spout. The influence of Andean ancestors is clearly recognizable in the facial characteristics and incorporation of tumi-shaped design elements. The traditional stylized decorative patterns are designed to imply arms, clothing and ritual tattoos. The interior of this thin-walled vessel is painted in black and the vessel is coated inside and out with the natural tree resin lacquer used to waterproof it. A choice example collected in the 1960’s. Ex Pollack estate. Value range $250 - $350.
